Want a wooden brim on your strapback? We’ve got you covered

All in all, most caps on the market are relatively similar in terms of materials used and design techniques, however our friends at AUSTRA have set new levels with their new piece.

Based in Latvia, AUSTRA specialises in making headwear that’s a little out of the ordinary, and not necessarily something you may have seen before. The woolen caps feature an awesome hardwood peak!

Who are AUSTRA?

AUSTRA is an accessories and clothing manufacturer focusing on minimalistic design with natural materials – exotic hardwood, genuine leather, aluminium and brass. Avoiding synthetic components and creating each product with character. All AUSTRA products are entirely handcrafted in Latvia, EU.

Cap Collectors recently got our hands on the AUSTRA “GREY PAU FERRO”, a grey natural cotton snapback hat with a Pau ferro (Santos Rosewood) brim. The special design keeps fabric and brim tight together. The wooden brim is made from three layered plywood and finished with highly durable natural wax making it flexible and resistant to external environment.

In case you weren’t aware, the Pau Ferro (Libidibia ferrea) is “a beautiful tree found in Brazil and Bolivia. From its appearance and rosy hue Pau Ferro resembles rosewood, but is much harder and is considered to be an ironwood. Thanks to its qualities and hardness Pau Ferro is used for guitar fingerboards and gunstocks.”

A wooden peak is not something we’ve seen before, and we instantly loved it when AUSTRA sent it out for us to take a look at. The concept is actually quite brilliant – not only do you have a wide variety of wood styles to choose from, it’s also very practical. All cap collectors know the feeling of misery when you’re wearing a fresh cap and it starts to rain – a soggy brim on your hat leads to an unhappy cap collector. However, with a wooden brim that problem is effectively solved as the rain will simply run off.

As I said with the brim, the design of the caps are fantastic too. The contrast between the hardwood pattern and the soft, grey wool crown is subtle and pleasing. I never thought I’d be writing a piece about how a wooden item of clothing looks good, but here we are! The small logo on the front of the cap is also a really nice touch which gives this piece an overall great look.

This particular cap costs $75.00 direct from AUSTRA, though they have other caps that range from $65.00 up to $99.00.
